Ladies Huddle had all the ingredients to create a perfect Sunday – cocktails, shopping, gifts, dinner, and most importantly, the opportunity to “practice” with the WVU football team.
This was my 4th year attending the adrenaline-charged event, which is hosted by the Mountaineer Athletic Club and the WVU football team. And it had by far the largest turnout, with 176 women raring to go on the field to show off their fancy footwork and end zone dance moves.
The evening kicked off with a cocktail reception and Mountaineer Style Trunk Show.
I went with my friends Linda Grandon and her sister Mary Virginia Kerns. As members of the MAC Women’s Supporting Athletics, Linda and I got to vote at the beginning of the event on where the group was going to donate $20,000.
The winning vote went to support a mobile rifle range for the 19-time NCAA Champion WVU Rifle team. It will allow WVU to set up a fully functioning rifle range in multiple arenas with 20 firing points and the most accurate electronic targets on the market.
From there, we headed through the west concourse to the Puskar Center weight room. I couldn’t resist picking up a 25 lb. dumbbell before heading out onto Mountaineer Field.
The hour we spent on the field with the team was the highlight. It was filled with spangled moments of rapturous joy.
The players coached us through drills at every position. We sprinted, we snapped, we shuffled and we tackled.
Afterwards we all joined together to sing Take Me Home, Country Roads. I get chills just thinking about it.
The night ended with a dinner and live auction in Touchdown Terrace.
